IBM: the one week review

Ok so this is the first in a possible series (no guarantees) about what it’s like to work at IBM. This is going to be a brief table of pro’s and cons (there are always cons no matter how great a company).

Pros

  • Shiny new laptop (1.6Ghz 2Gb RAM Thinkpad T60p)
  • Excellent IT support
  • Linux IT support
  • Think free friday (do you own stuff on friday afternoon)
  • A group of Linux types for me to get to know via IRC
  • The ability to install Linux on my Thinkpad and do all my work under Linux!!
  • Flexi time so you can only work 4 days a week if you want

Cons

  • No kettles :( We microwave water to make it hot for coffee and tea
  • Crazy ass security!! I have 5 or 6 passwords - all 8 character alphanumeric - my head hurts
  • No good map tool for the site. The site is massive and complex, my think friday project is to make this better

So there we have it - my one week assessment. As you can probably tell I’m having a great time :)

DRM free iTunes like thingy called emusic

[emusic] is cool new download service that lets you have DRM free (as in beer) mp3’s of all the artists you love :)

It’s a subscription service and for £8.99 a month you can download 40 songs. Pretty neat eh? Plus they’re giving you 25 free songs when you sign up and you can cancel before it costs you any money if you don’t like it!

Songbird is a really cool media player thing a bit like the iTunes client without the iTunes DRM fairplay crap!

I went to go and see the [Howling Bells] on Sunday night at the Fleece.

All I can say is that they were excellent, and so were their support: [The Veils].

Afan Forest Mountain Biking

Last week me and my work buddy Doug went for a bit of a ride around the [MBUK] and thought it looked excellent, and we weren’t wrong.

There are 4 courses, and we decided to take on ['the wall'] which you’ll be glad to hear is a physical thing rather than a metaphorical fitness thing :)

The course starts off pretty nicely with a little ride along by the river and then moves into the uphill part (frowny faces on the map) which is half in the forest and half on the fire roads. Bits of this are ok, bits of it have terrain with big-ish stones and loose scree making it hard to climb.

Once the climbing is over you’re pretty much halfway through the course - now comes the fun stuff :) From here on it’s pretty much pure downhill windy singletrack either in the forest or on the edge of the hill. It was on this section that I fell off.

My nice arm bruiseMy nice arm bruise Hosted on Zooomr

Imagine the scene cutting along the edge of the hill under the cover of trees, a steep upward slope on my right, a steep slope downward on my left. These bits of the course all seem to have objects ‘guarding’ you from going down the slope. I say ‘guarding’ as they’re often rocks or tree stumps which are easy to hit with your pedal and send you flying. So that’s what I did - I was manouvering myself along a quick bit and clipped my left pedal on a tree stump. Two somersaults and 10 feet or so later I came to a stop on the steep slope.

Amazingly I was totally unhurt and my bike wasn’t busted either! So scabbled up the slope dragging my bike with me and carried on. It was only later that I noticed the bruise so I guess I didn’t get away scot-free, but it’s a small price to pay for such excellent singletrack.

The only other problem is that your hands start to cramp after 15 minutes of feathering brakes and trying to hold on over the seriously bumpy terrain.

Anyway I’d recommend this course to anyone who fancies a decent ride without having to go too far. Also it’s really easy to get there: get on the M4 get off at Port Talbot and follow the signs to Afan Valley Forest. Easy!

The best bit is we’re going back next week with some more friends - should be excellent :)

dapper drake

I posted a [while ago] about the Airport Extreme driver for Linux being finished but not being capable of WEP (wireless encryption gubbins). Well since then I’ve wiped [Gentoo] off the old iBook and gone totally user friendly with [Ubuntu].

On installing the current stable version (Breezy Badger) I was dissapointed to see that the driver wasn’t yet supported (due to an older kernel). So I went crazy and downloaded the most recent tesing version [Dapper Drake (flight 6)].

Well what can I say, half way through the install I was asked which of my two network cards I wanted to use to check for updates. So now here I am sitting in the living room writing my blog from my 128bit WEP wireless connection under Ubuntu.

Seriously, if you have a few gig free on your drive you should check it out.

Aiport Extreme under linux

Well I discovered the other day that an open source broadcom driver has been written which supports Airport Extreme (the Apple wireless card) so I gave it a go. And you know what?? It bloody works, as long as you don’t want any encyption (which I do).

So I’ve put down a [forum post] and we’ll see what comes out of the wash :)

hosting

Ok it’s been a while since I actually posted anything (as usual) blah blah work, blah blah life etc etc.

Anyways of most importance is the fact that I’ve changed hosting providers, from web mania (no link due to their absolute shitness and me not wanting anything to do with them) to [blackcurrant hosting] - which among other things supports [Ruby on Rails!] and lets you run crazy ass commands like [wget] and [ssh]!!

This also means I can experiment with other blogging tools like [typo], check it out monkeys! [monki on rails], yes yes I know I’ve only just changed - but I’m fickle like that :D

del.icio.us

Ok first up a little info on MarioKart DS.

  1. It doesn’t support the PSK flavour of wireless security, but it does support WEP which isn’t great but it’s not terrible either.
  2. If your wireless access point doesn’t do DHCP there are lots of other settings if you scroll down (which I didn’t spot for ages).
  3. You can get your DS’s MAC address from it so you can tighten up the security a notch.
  4. When you first register with the Nintendo WiFI systems you’re only supposed to have that username with that DS (it’s kinda like a unique ID).
  5. Though finding another three people to race against can take a while there’s very little evidence of lag within the game. Though this might be the result of removing ’slower’ players from your possible opponents.

Secondly I’ve been using [del.icio.us] (delicious) quite a bit recently. If you grab [their Firefox extension] and the [Foxylicious extension] you can add pages at will and have a live bookmark that contains all your bookmarks!

You can also have the cool tag roller that you can now see over there >>>>>
