Do we need user censorship or should we just be more careful?

Why would we ever need user censorship?

Recently on my Zipline one of my contacts was asking [KT] about the ability to block a user from viewing their photos.

The issue was around a photo of a niece that had been uploaded and that had been favourite-ed by a user with a bit of a dodgy handle. The other favourites of this user were all slightly dodgy images.

My contact could see that this user had added the picture of the niece as a favourite and could also see the users other favourites along with his user name, thus giving everything some context.

The interesting bit about this is that if this user had just right clicked and downloaded the pic, along with the other pics in their favourites, then no one would be the wiser.

So is the solution here that we should be blocking users from viewing our photos? If so what is the point of putting them online on a photo sharing website?

The point of the photo sharing website (in my opinion) is to either use it as a photo album (aka photo dumping ground like photobucket), or use it as a showcase for the photos that you’re most proud of. Either way none of them are really designed to allow only certain people to view your pictures — it’s for photo sharing after all. The exception to this is Zooomr where you can say an image is for “Friends and Family” and you’re given some special URLs that link to the pictures, but it’s not really the same.

Facebook has the perfect system for only allowing particular users to see your pictures by only allowing your ‘friends’, which are (hopefully) people that you have vetted in some way, to see them. Which in this case is probably the most sensible option for ’sharing’ the image in question.

So what is the solution? Wang everything on Facebook?

Well I think the solution here is to think about where is most appropriate for your image, and I think this decision should be entirely based on content.

Pictures of people generally only mean things to those people and their social circle, unless they are someone famous I guess, so a photo sharing website shouldn’t be your first choice for this image type.

Where as, a cool picture of a mushroom or a sunrise would be totally wasted on Facebook, and should be shown in all its glory on a photo sharing site like [Zooomr]

The point is you need to consider the content, chose the appropriate level of ’security’, convert this into a website (be it Zooomr, Facebook or your own private album) and put it there, because as disappointing as it may seem not seeing this kind of thing happen doesn’t mean that it isn’t happening.

A Test for Dog owners

I think there should be a yearly test for dog owners, kind of like an MOT, and just like an MOT it’s for the safety of the public.

The problem is that some people are retards and buy a bear rather than a dog, this test will force these people to get rid of their giant bears.

It works like this, and 1 meter diameter circle is painted on the ground in which the dog owner must stand holding their dog lead to which the dog is attached (the dog can be outside of the circle).

Then a man comes near the circle holding a steak or the dogs favourite toy or whatever attracts the dog.

The owner must remain inside the circle during this time, if they step out of the circle or are dragged out then their dog is taken away.

Simple!

Should Doctors get sick pay?

I mean, they chose to work with sick people didn’t they? It hardly seem fair that they spend their time at work coming into close contact with people that are sick and then have the guile to take time off for it!

unbelievable.

Biodiesel

I like biodiesel I think it’s a great recycling idea, unfortunately being a cyclist it’s by far and away the worst fuel to breathe in. It really hangs in the air and tastes like a kind of burnt barbecue, any chance someone can create a filter for it?

This might sound like a small problem but it’s surprising is how many cars that overtake me are using it, it’s a lot more than you’d think!

How to automatically/automagically geotag your photos (using Open Source stuffs)

A while ago I asked some dudes on Zooomr if they had any recommendations for magical geotagging photos taken on your camera, and the responses were useful but not quite what I was expecting.

Somewhat naively I had assumed that a solution for automatically tagging photos as you took them already existed, but it doesn’t (as far as I can tell). That is to say there is no device that you can attach to your camera which tags your photos as you take them.

All of the solutions I have seen will record the GPS location as you take them around and then use software to line up the time stamps of your photos with the time stamps taken at regular intervals by the GPS device.

This might sound slightly annoying, but acceptable. Except if you’re me and you only have OSX and Linux based computers (i.e. the software isn’t going to work). Another problem with this is that these devices cost around £70 ($140) which seems an awful lot for something that doesn’t really do anything too special.

So, what’s the solution? Well I’m glad you asked :)

In my opinion the best solution to this problem is to use the following ‘tool-chain’:

Camera >> Images on Computer >> GPS Track from GPS device >> Small amount of code to ‘munge’ GPS locations into images using timestamps >> Upload!!

So there are probably three variables in this, which I’ll go through in sequence:

  1. GPS device
This is the actual hardware device that records where you are. What you really need is a GPS device that will record a ‘track’ this is basically a list of GPS locations recorded either at time based or distance based intervals. Pretty much all GPS devices do this by default (i.e. you turn them on and they start doing it automatically), except the in-car GPS as where you have been is not important to them. Also you need to make sure it’s got some kind of data cable attachment so you get the data back out :)

I personally have a Garmin eTrex Venture Hc. This little baby costs about £120 ($240), it’s a bit more than the base models but is also perfect for all the walking that I do and has an exciting colour screen :)

The main benefit of the Venture range is that the receiving module is hyper sensitive, which means that it can get a signal when it’s in my camera bag :D. Cheaper models are available (i.e. Garmin Geko) and they just have smaller LCD screens but perform the basic track task just as well.

Also the Garmin modules are supported by GPSBabel which is what we need to talk about next.

  2. GPS importing software
[GPSBabel GPSBabel GPSBabel]. That’s pretty much all you need to know. Or on OSX you can use [LoadMyTracks].

What these bits of code do is import your track and save it as an GPX file (which is just an XML file that conforms to the GPX schema).

  3. ‘Munge-ing’ software
I got 90% of the way to writing this by using Perl ExifTool (like Zooomr does) and Perl GPX before I noticed that some clever SOB had already done it - introducing [gspPhoto]!!

What this little badger does is take your photos timestamps, match them with the timestamps of the locations in your GPS track and insert GPS EXIF data accordingly aka geotag them.

PHEW! I _know_ it sounds complex, but I promise it really isn’t, importing tracks is easy, running gpsPhoto is easy. The only bits you need to remember is to turn on your GPS device when you’re out shooting and to roughly sync the time on your camera with the time on the GPS unit!!

Done!

Anatomy - sometimes nature gets it wrong?

OK so here’s the scene:

  • You go out with some mates and drink copious amounts of diuretic fluids - good times

But here’s where your stupid anatomy lets you down:

  • You leave the drinking establishment and immediately need to empty your full-to-bursting bladder even if you did so just before you left the pub - slightly inconvenient times
  • You get home, crawl into bed and go to sleep. Then you wake up in the middle of the night with a headache, you bladder once again full-to-bursting and with an incredible thirst!! Come on body, my bladder contents (by this point) are at least 90% water why the hell am I so thirst!! - inordinately bad times

If you have been let down by your body and want to talk about it, please use the comment form below (no pictures please)

N.B. I might have used Anatomy in the wrong sense here but I was all out of words for what I really meant, sorry.

Bees

Bees. You need to diversify.

I was in the supermarket at some point in the past and saw at least 40-50 jars of Honey, which leads me to believe that there’s no real demand for it anymore.

I believe that this lack of demand is down to the following reasons:

* No one likes Honey because it tastes crap and is full of dead bees
* People only buy it if they’ve got confused between Honey and Golden Syrup
* ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” Treacle
* ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” Maple Syrup
* It lasts forever, especially when you don’t actually eat it - so everyone in the world probably has a jar or two by now

Luckily Bee’s I have a few ideas to save you going under!!

* Collect flowers and sell them! You were already going to the flower for nectar or whatever, so bring it back and sell it
** For a niche market: remove all the pollen from the flowers so that you can sell them to people who are normally allergic to flowers
* Mining - Everybody needs coal! (shamelessly lifted from Mitchell and Webb)
* Cleaning. Bees are small so can probably mop up all those bits of dust that are in the air once you’ve wiped a dust surface. They could also remove spiders that you don’t want to touch
* Sky writing - you know, like in cartoons when they make a fist shape!

Good luck bees!

Should I get a Dishwasher?

So when we were on holiday in Keswick (photo’s to come I promise!), the cottage we were staying in had a small dishwasher - probably because their hot water wasn’t really very hot. Emma has always been against dishwashers as she never believed that they cleaned things properly - but after using the one on holiday we’re kind of convinced they clean stuff pretty good.

Hence the (environmental) dilemma

For:

  • Saves me doing it
  • Cleans stuff a lot hotter than we can

Against:

  • Possibly uses more water - contentious point as it’s hard to measure how much water we’re using when we do it by hand - but even the most efficient use at least 12 litres
  • More electricity usage - though we wouldn’t use the hot water so much if we had one as the shower heats it itself

So I’m stuck. Opinions please! Also feel free to add pros/cons :)
